Hadith 285
Ṣaḥīḥ

Musnad Salamah ibn al-Akwaʿ (may Allah be pleased with him)

Salamah ibn al-Akwaʿ (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: ʿĀmir was a poet. He dismounted and began to chant while driving the camels: “O Allah, were it not for You, we would not have been guided, nor given charity, nor prayed. So forgive what wrong we have done, offering ourselves in ransom for You, and make our feet firm if we meet the enemy, and send down tranquility upon us. Indeed, when the call to arms is raised, we answer it, and to the cry [of battle] they have turned for support.” The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) ﷺ asked, “Who is this driver?” They said, “Ibn al-Akwaʿ.” He said, “May Allah have mercy on him.” A man said, “It has become binding upon him, Messenger of Allah, if only you had let us enjoy him longer.” Then he was struck: he had gone to strike a Jewish man, but the tip of the sword recoiled and struck his own knee, and he died from it. The people began saying, “His deeds have been nullified; he killed himself.” So I went to the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) ﷺ after he had returned to Madīnah, while he was in the mosque, and said, “Messenger of Allah, they claim that ʿĀmir’s deeds have been nullified.” He said, “Who says that?” I said, “Some men from the Anṣār, so-and-so and so-and-so.” He said, “Whoever said that has lied. He indeed has a double reward”, indicating this with two of his fingers, “he was a striver and a warrior, and few Arabs walk the earth with the like of what he had.” Reference: Musnad Aḥmad 285

Hadith 286
Ṣaḥīḥ

Musnad Salamah ibn al-Akwaʿ (may Allah be pleased with him)

Salamah ibn al-Akwaʿ (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: We set out with the Prophet (ﷺ) ﷺ toward Khaybar. A man from the army said, “ʿĀmir, let us hear some of your verses.” So he dismounted and began chanting for them, saying: “By Allah, were it not for Allah, we would not have been guided...” and he recited other verses which I did not memorize. The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) ﷺ asked, “Who is this driver?” They said, “ʿĀmir ibn al-Akwaʿ.” He said, “May Allah have mercy on him.” A man said, “Prophet of Allah, if only you had let us enjoy him longer.” When the army formed ranks and fought the enemy, ʿĀmir ibn al-Akwaʿ was struck by the pommel of his own sword and died. That evening, [the Muslims] lit many fires, and the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) ﷺ asked, “What is this fire, and for what is it being lit?” They said, “For domesticated donkeys.” He said, “Pour out what is in [the pots] and break them.” A man said, “Shall we instead pour out what is in them and wash them?” He said, “Or that.” Reference: Musnad Aḥmad 286

Hadith 297
Ṣaḥīḥ

Musnad Salamah ibn al-Akwaʿ (may Allah be pleased with him)

Salamah ibn al-Akwaʿ (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: I went out from Madīnah heading toward al-Ghābah, and when I reached the mountain pass of al-Ghābah, a young slave of ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn ʿAwf met me. I said, “Woe to you, what is wrong?” He said, “The Messenger of Allah’s milk-camels have been seized.” I asked, “Who took them?” He said, “Ghaṭafān and Fazārah.” So I let out three cries that could be heard between the two lava plains [of Madīnah]: “Yā ṣabāḥāh! Yā ṣabāḥāh!” Then I rushed off until I caught up with them, having already seized the camels, and began shooting arrows at them, saying, “I am the son of al-Akwaʿ, and today the base ones will be destroyed.” I recovered the camels from them before they could drink, and drove them back. The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) ﷺ met me on the way, and I said, “Messenger of Allah, the people are thirsty, and I hurried them along before they could drink; shall I go after them?” He said, “Ibn al-Akwaʿ, you have gained mastery over them, so be gentle; the people are now nearing their own kin.” Reference: Musnad Aḥmad 297
