How the Quran Was Revealed

The Quran was not revealed all at once. Islamic tradition holds that it was sent down to Prophet Muhammad ﷺ in stages over roughly twenty-three years, beginning in 610 CE with the first revelation in the Cave of Hira and continuing until shortly before his death in 632 CE. Revelations came through the angel Jibril and are traditionally divided into two broad periods: the Meccan period (before the migration to Medina), when the content largely concerned belief, the oneness of God, and the afterlife; and the Medinan period (after the migration), when revelation increasingly addressed law, social organization, and the affairs of a growing Muslim community. Verses were typically revealed in response to specific events, questions posed to the Prophet ﷺ, or particular needs of the community at the time — a mode of revelation scholars call asbab al-nuzul, the 'occasions of revelation.' Companions memorized each revelation as it came and also wrote portions down on available materials, and the Prophet ﷺ would specify where each new verse belonged within the developing text, so that by the end of his life the order of the Quran as recited today was already fixed, even before its full compilation into a single written volume.
