Belief in the Day of Judgment

Belief in the Day of Judgment (Yawm al-Qiyamah) is the conviction that life in this world is not the end of the story — that every person will be resurrected, held to account for their beliefs and actions, and judged by God. It is one of the six pillars of faith and one of the most frequently discussed subjects in the Quran. Islamic teaching describes a sequence of events surrounding this day: the blowing of the trumpet by the angel Israfil, the resurrection of all humanity, and a gathering before God in which every person's record of deeds is presented. Actions are described as being weighed, and each person's ultimate destination — Paradise (Jannah) or the Fire (Jahannam) — is tied to their faith and deeds in this life, tempered by God's mercy and justice together. This belief functions as a source of both accountability and hope in Islamic practice: accountability, because no wrong is understood to simply disappear unaddressed; and hope, because sincere repentance and good deeds are described as capable of outweighing a person's failings. The certainty of this day is presented in the Quran as a reason to take this worldly life seriously without being consumed by it.
