Musnad ʿAbdullāh ibn Abī Awfā (may Allah be pleased with him)

ʿAbdullāh ibn Abī Awfā (may Allah be pleased with him) is reported by al-Hajarī, who said: I went out for the funeral of the daughter of ʿAbdullāh ibn Abī Awfā, who was riding his black mule. The women told the man leading it, “Bring him in front of the bier,” which he did. Then I heard [Ibn Abī Awfā] say to him, “Where is the bier?” He said, “Behind you.” He did this once or twice, then said, “Did I not forbid you to put me in front of the bier?” He then heard a woman striking her face in mourning and said, “Enough! Did I not forbid you this? The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) ﷺ used to forbid wailing eulogies, though each of you may shed as many tears as she wishes.” When the bier was set down, he came forward and pronounced four takbīrs over it, then paused briefly; some of those present, thinking he had forgotten, said “Subḥān Allāh,” so he turned to them and said, “Did you think I was going to pronounce a fifth takbīr?” They said, “Yes.” He said, “The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) ﷺ used to pause briefly after the fourth takbīr.” After the burial he sat, and we sat with him, and he was asked about the flesh of domesticated donkeys. He said, “On the day of Khaybar, domesticated donkeys came out from the village, and the people fell upon them and slaughtered them, and the pots were already boiling with some of the meat, when the caller of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) ﷺ called out, ‘Pour it out,’ so we poured it out.” [Al-Hajarī added:] I saw ʿAbdullāh ibn Abī Awfā wearing a green silk cloak.
