Nawfal ibn Masʿūd reported: “We came to Anas ibn Mālik and said: ‘Narrate to us what you heard from the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) ﷺ.’ He said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) ﷺ say: ‘Three qualities: whoever possesses them is protected from the Fire and the Fire is forbidden for him: faith in Allah, love of Allah, and that being cast into the fire and burned is more beloved to him than returning to disbelief.’”

Anas ibn Mālik (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: “The Prophet (ﷺ) ﷺ passed by a garden of Banū al-Najjār and heard a sound from a grave. He asked: ‘When did the occupant of this grave die?’ They said: ‘He died in the time of jāhiliyya.’ He said: ‘Were it not that you would stop burying one another, I would have prayed to Allah to let you hear the torment of the grave.’”

Ḥumayd reported: “Anas [ibn Mālik] was asked about the night prayer of the Prophet (ﷺ) ﷺ. He said: ‘Whenever we wished to see him praying, we would see him praying; and whenever we wished to see him sleeping, we would see him sleeping.’”

Ḥumayd reported: “Anas [ibn Mālik] was asked about the sale of fruit. He said: ‘The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) ﷺ prohibited the sale of the dates of a palm tree until they begin to ripen (tuzhī).’ Anas was asked: ‘What is tuzhī?’ He said: ‘It turns reddish.’”

Anas ibn Mālik (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: “On the day of Badr, the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) ﷺ said: ‘Who will go and see what has happened to Abū Jahl?’ Ibn Masʿūd set out and found that the two sons of ʿAfrāʾ had struck him until he lay still. He grabbed him by the beard and said: ‘Are you Abū Jahl?’ He said: ‘And is there anything nobler than a man whom you, or his own people, have killed?’”

Anas ibn Mālik (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: “When the verse was revealed: ‘You will never attain righteousness until you spend from what you love’ [Āl ʿImrān: 92] and ‘Who is it that will give Allah a goodly loan’ [al-Baqarah: 245], Abū Ṭalḥah said: ‘O Messenger of Allah, [I wish to give] my orchard at such and such a place. By Allah, had I been able to keep it secret I would not have announced it.’ He said: ‘Distribute it among your poor relatives.’”

Anas ibn Mālik (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (ﷺ) ﷺ said: “I entered Paradise and found myself by a river whose banks had tents of pearl. I placed my hand in the bed of the flowing water and a most fragrant musk. I said: ‘O Jibrīl, what is this?’ He said: ‘This is al-Kawthar that Allah has given you, or: that your Lord has given you.’”

Anas ibn Mālik (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (ﷺ) ﷺ would say: “O Allah, I seek refuge with You from incapacity and laziness, and from decrepit old age and miserliness, and from cowardice, and I seek refuge with You from the torment of the grave.” And he also mentioned the trial of life and death in it.

Anas ibn Mālik (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: “Two men sneezed in the presence of the Prophet (ﷺ) ﷺ, and he said the blessing (yarḥamuka Allāh) for one of them. Someone said to him: ‘Two men sneezed and you blessed only one of them?’ He said: ‘This one praised Allah [after sneezing], while that one did not praise Allah.’” Yaḥyā [ibn Saʿīd al-Qaṭṭān] said: “Sometimes [Sulaymān al-Taymī] said: ‘this one (hādhā)’ or words to that effect.”

Anas ibn Mālik (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: “One day the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) ﷺ said to his Companions: ‘Who among you attended a funeral today?’ ʿUmar said: ‘I did.’ He said: ‘Who among you visited a sick person today?’ ʿUmar said: ‘I did.’ He said: ‘Who gave charity today?’ ʿUmar said: ‘I did.’ He said: ‘Who among you began this day fasting?’ ʿUmar said: ‘I did.’ He said: ‘It is guaranteed, it is guaranteed.’”

Anas ibn Mālik (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: A woman met the Prophet (ﷺ) ﷺ on one of the streets of Madīnah and said, “O Messenger of Allah, I have a need I would like you to fulfill for me.” He said to her, “Mother of so and so, sit on whichever side of the street you wish, and I will sit with you [and attend to your need].” So she sat down, and the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) ﷺ sat with her until she had finished [telling him] what she needed.

حَدَّثَنَا مَرْوَانُ بْنُ مُعَاوِيَةَ أَخْبَرَنَا حُمَيْدٌ الطَّوِيلُ عَنْ أَنَسِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ أَنَّ امْرَأَةً لَقِيَتِ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فِي طَرِيقٍ مِنْ طُرُقِ الْمَدِينَةِ فَقَالَتْ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ إِنَّ لِي إِلَيْكَ حَاجَةً قَالَ يَا أُمَّ فُلَانٍ اجْلِسِي فِي أَيِّ نَوَاحِي السِّكَكِ شِئْتِ أَجْلِسْ إِلَيْكِ قَالَ فَقَعَدَتْ فَقَعَدَ إِلَيْهَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ حَتَّى قَضَتْ حَاجَتَهَا

Anas ibn Mālik (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) ﷺ said, “Do not marvel at anyone until you see how his life is sealed, for the doer may act for a time of his life, or a while of his age, with a righteous deed such that, were he to die upon it, he would enter Paradise; then he changes and does an evil deed. And a servant may act for a while of his age with an evil deed such that, were he to die upon it, he would enter the Fire; then he changes and does a righteous deed. And when Allah intends good for a servant, He employs him before his death.” They said, “O Messenger of Allah, how does He employ him?” He said, “He grants him success in a righteous deed, then takes his soul upon it.”

حَدَّثَنَا يَزِيدُ بْنُ هَارُونَ أَخْبَرَنَا حُمَيْدٌ عَنْ أَنَسٍ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ لَا عَلَيْكُمْ أَنْ لَا تَعْجَبُوا بِأَحَدٍ حَتَّى تَنْظُرُوا بِمَ يُخْتَمُ لَهُ فَإِنَّ الْعَامِلَ يَعْمَلُ زَمَانًا مِنْ عُمْرِهِ أَوْ بُرْهَةً مِنْ دَهْرِهِ بِعَمَلٍ صَالِحٍ لَوْ مَاتَ عَلَيْهِ دَخَلَ الْجَنَّةَ ثُمَّ يَتَحَوَّلُ فَيَعْمَلُ عَمَلًا سَيِّئًا وَإِنَّ الْعَبْدَ لَيَعْمَلُ الْبُرْهَةَ مِنْ دَهْرِهِ بِعَمَلٍ سَيِّئٍ لَوْ مَاتَ عَلَيْهِ دَخَلَ النَّارَ ثُمَّ يَتَحَوَّلُ فَيَعْمَلُ عَمَلًا صَالِحًا وَإِذَا أَرَادَ اللَّهُ بِعَبْدٍ خَيْرًا اسْتَعْمَلَهُ قَبْلَ مَوْتِهِ قَالُوا يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ وَكَيْفَ يَسْتَعْمِلُهُ قَالَ يُوَفِّقُهُ لِعَمَلٍ صَالِحٍ ثُمَّ يَقْبِضُهُ عَلَيْهِ

Anas ibn Mālik (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: There was a man who used to write [the revelation] for the Prophet (ﷺ) ﷺ, and he had read al-Baqarah and Āl ʿImrān. When a man among us had read al-Baqarah and Āl ʿImrān, he became eminent in our eyes, that is, he was held in high regard. The Prophet (ﷺ) ﷺ would dictate to him ghafūran raḥīman (Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful), but he would write ʿalīman ḥakīman (All-Knowing, All-Wise). The Prophet (ﷺ) ﷺ would say to him, “Write such and such; write as you wish.” And he would dictate to him ʿalīman ḥakīman, and the man would say, “Shall I write samīʿan baṣīran (All-Hearing, All-Seeing)?” and he would say, “Write as you wish.” Then that man apostatized from Islam and joined the polytheists, saying, “I know Muḥammad better than you do; I used to write whatever I wished.” Then that man died, and the Prophet (ﷺ) ﷺ said, “The earth will not accept him.” Anas said: Abū Ṭalḥah (may Allah be pleased with him) told me that he came to the land in which that man had died and found him cast out [upon its surface]. Abū Ṭalḥah asked, “What is the matter with this man?” They said, “We have buried him repeatedly, but the earth would not accept him.”

حَدَّثَنَا يَزِيدُ بْنُ هَارُونَ أَخْبَرَنَا حُمَيْدٌ عَنْ أَنَسٍ أَنَّ رَجُلًا كَانَ يَكْتُبُ لِلنَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَقَدْ كَانَ قَرَأَ الْبَقَرَةَ وَآلَ عِمْرَانَ وَكَانَ الرَّجُلُ إِذَا قَرَأَ الْبَقَرَةَ وَآلَ عِمْرَانَ جَدَّ فِينَا يَعْنِي عَظُمَ فَكَانَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يُمْلِي عَلَيْهِ غَفُورًا رَحِيمًا فَيَكْتُبُ عَلِيمًا حَكِيمًا فَيَقُولُ لَهُ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ اكْتُبْ كَذَا وَكَذَا اكْتُبْ كَيْفَ شِئْتَ وَيُمْلِي عَلَيْهِ عَلِيمًا حَكِيمًا فَيَقُولُ أَكْتُبُ سَمِيعًا بَصِيرًا فَيَقُولُ اكْتُبْ كَيْفَ شِئْتَ فَارْتَدَّ ذَلِكَ الرَّجُلُ عَنِ الْإِسْلَامِ فَلَحِقَ بِالْمُشْرِكِينَ وَقَالَ أَنَا أَعْلَمُكُمْ بِمُحَمَّدٍ إِنْ كُنْتُ لَأَكْتُبُ كَيْفَمَا شِئْتُ فَمَاتَ ذَلِكَ الرَّجُلُ فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِنَّ الْأَرْضَ لَمْ تَقْبَلْهُ وَقَالَ أَنَسٌ فَحَدَّثَنِي أَبُو طَلْحَةَ أَنَّهُ أَتَى الْأَرْضَ الَّتِي مَاتَ فِيهَا ذَلِكَ الرَّجُلُ فَوَجَدَهُ مَنْبُوذًا فَقَالَ أَبُو طَلْحَةَ مَا شَأْنُ هَذَا الرَّجُلِ قَالُوا قَدْ دَفَنَّاهُ مِرَارًا فَلَمْ تَقْبَلْهُ الْأَرْضُ

Anas ibn Mālik (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) ﷺ was at al-Baqīʿ when a man called out to man, “O Abū al-Qāsim!” The Prophet (ﷺ) ﷺ turned toward him, and the man said, “I did not mean you, O Messenger of Allah; I only meant so and so.” The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) ﷺ said, “Name yourselves after my name, but do not take my kunya.”

Anas ibn Mālik (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: A man asked the Prophet (ﷺ) ﷺ about the time of the ṣubḥ (dawn) prayer. So he ordered Bilāl (may Allah be pleased with him), who gave the adhān when dawn had broken; then he called the iqāmah and prayed. The next day he delayed until it had grown light; then he ordered him to call the iqāmah and prayed. Then he summoned the man and said, “Between these two is the time.”

Anas ibn Mālik (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: Among the supplications of the Prophet (ﷺ) ﷺ on the day of the Battle of Ḥunayn was: “O Allah, if You will [that the Muslims be defeated], You shall not be worshipped after this day.”
