Hadith 325
Ṣaḥīḥ

Musnad ʿAmr ibn Salamah al-Jarmī

ʿAmr ibn Salamah al-Jarmī (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: We were dwelling at a watering-place, and riders (or, as Ismāʿīl said on another occasion, people) used to pass by us returning from the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) ﷺ; I would draw near to them and listen, until I had memorized a great deal of Qurʾān. The people were delaying their acceptance of Islam until the conquest of Makkah; when it was conquered, each tribe hastened, and a man would come to him and say, “O Messenger of Allah, I am the delegate of such-and-such a people, and I have brought you news of their acceptance of Islam.” My father set out with his people’s acceptance of Islam, and when he returned he said, “The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) ﷺ has said, ‘Let whichever of you has gathered the most Qurʾān lead you.‘” They looked, and, though I was among a great assembly, they found no one who had gathered more Qurʾān than I, so they brought me forward while I was a boy. I led them in prayer wearing a cloak of mine, and whenever I bowed or prostrated it would ride up, exposing my nakedness, until an old woman of ours said, after we had prayed, “Cover up the backside of your reciter, for us!” So they cut out a garment for me, and I have never been so pleased with anything as I was with that garment.
